Creative brains are a valuable, limited resource. They shouldn’t be wasted on re-inventing the wheel when there are so many fascinated new problems waiting out there.

To behave like an artist, you have to believe that the thinking time of other artists is precious – so much so that it’s almost a moral duty for you to share information, solve problems and then give the solutions away just so other artists can solve new problems instead of having to perpetually re-address old ones.

Strangers

This morning, I was feeling bummed, and generally defeated, which has been a theme with me lately. At the grocery store, I stood in line behind a 40-something year old woman. At one point, she turned around to check the area behind us, and saw me. She stopped mid-pivot and said to me warmly, “You have a stunning face. You are beautiful.” I said “Thank you.” She continued, “No really, you should model. The way you dress and everything, your hair, is very sophisticated. Are you in your late 20’s?” Me: “No, I’m only 22…turning 23.” She said “I have a 26 year old daughter, so I know people your age well…was your mother strict with you?” I smiled, “She used to be, not so much anymore.” The woman nodded. “That’s because she knows you’re making the right decisions.”

And this is the part that really threw me for a loop. That demonstrated the complete kindess of strangers, and how uncanny it is how well they can hit the nail on the head.

She held up a finger “Don’t you ever settle for less. Okay? You can get anyone you want. Don’t date any jerks. Don’t do that to yourself. You can get someone good. It’s important that you don’t settle.”

I wanted to say No, I’m turning into a selfish person. I can’t love people correctly anymore. It doesn’t matter how I look if I can’t do that. But I let myself receive the compliments. I decided I was more impressed with her instinct to mother me in line at the deli counter than I was interested in beating myself up at that point in time. Part of me felt like crying and hugging her. Just happy someone cared.

“Thank you, really. That’s very kind of you to say.”

To me, that’s an example of community to follow. Just going out of your way to do something small for another person, maybe sensing that they need it, or deserve it. That’s a simple, small expression of love.

Things that are awesome about my new place:

There’s a cat. He’s adorable, but I don’t have to pay his vet bills.
There’s front loader washer and dryer in the basement. Finally, my clothes will stop getting destroyed in my dryer from 1990 and I can stop hoarding quarters to pay for it.
It’s a condo. Because I’m swanky like that.
The whole upstairs loft area is mine. With a skylight in my room, and a walk-in closet. I intend to full-blown Martha making this look awesome.
My commute to work is going to be- 10- count ‘em- 10 minutes.
My roommate is a pastry chef. I intend to let her gain weight vicariously through me, by eating as much as she’s willing to share.
It’s in a nice suburban neighborhood. No traffic noise.
I can save.money.

Doesn’t sound half bad. :)
